As reported earlier this week, thousands of toads have been exploding spontaneously in Germany, sending their entrails over three feet into the air. Since then, exploding toads have also been found across the border in a pond in Denmark.
Now, one German scientist theorizes that crows pecking out toad livers is behind it all. According to veterinarian Frank Mutschmann, this is not an uncommonon phenomenon, and after examining the exploded toads, says the wounds confirm this. After the bird pecks into the toad's body, the toad puffs up as part of its natural defense mechanism. But given the new hole in its chest, everything just bursts out.
The water in both ponds has been tested and found to be as clean or dirty as any other typical pond. Other theories suggest that a virus came over from the nearby horse track, or that the toads were committing suicide to balance out their population.
