URBAN LEGEND OF THE DAY: ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION
During the civil war, a bullet passed through the scrotum of a young man, then continued into the reproductive tract of a young woman some distance away. Nine months later, the woman gave birth, despite swearing to her doctor that she was still a virgin. The doctor informed the soldier of the strange situation, who quickly wed the young woman. This is, incidentally, where we get the phrase "son of a gun" from.

Nice story. Problem is, it's a fake dating way back to an 1874 joke article in the American Medical Examiner. Snopes, as usual, has the info.

-Snopes: Son Of A Gun

COMMENTS

The phrase "son of a gun" predates the Civil War. It was used at least as early as 1795-1805, where it refered to a baby conceived on the gun-decks during shipboard prostitute visits.
