First off, does this animal look anything different than an ordinary black house cat?
Though it never took root in the United States, the legend of a large, jaguar-like black cat has dated back hundreds of years in other countries, a belief akin to Bigfoot or Nessie. Recently, a report of a calf killed under strange circumstances in England was attributed to the Bodmin Moor Beast, supposedly a large black cat.
Two new articles hit today. In Robertson, Australia, a number of sightings have been made over the years of a large cat. And though 99% of the sightings turn out to be wild dogs, crytozoologist Michael Williams is investigating.
Another sighting was reported today in Ashburton, New Zealand, and there's actually a picture! Timaru resident Mark Brosnahan noticed a "a large black animal" in the hills overlooking his house and snapped some pictures. I personally have to say that it looks absolutely no different from every black cat I've ever seen in my life, but you be the judge (see the article for a bigger picture).
The article notes that there have been no evidence of "big cat faeces or kill remains."
