UPDATE: THIS ARTICLE WAS AN APRIL FOOLS DAY GAG, WHICH IS WHY I POINTED OUT THE APRIL 1 PART! THANKS TO SW READERS FOR POINTING OUT THAT IT WASN'T A BBC JOKE, BUT RATHER FROM A DIFT. SITE.
On April 1st, 2005, this faux-BBC article was posted about an outbreak of so-called "zombieism". It seems that a number of people have died from a new strain of malaria near the border of Laos in Cambodia. The new strain has a mortality rate of 100% - but the horror doesn't stop there.
After death, the parasite is able to restart the heart, effectively reanimating the corpse. The infected individual then behaves in an extremely violent manner, which scientists believe has to do with a combination of brain damage and a chemical released into the blood stream. A UN team has been dispatched to confirm the safety of the area, though Cambodian officials already claim the outbreak has been contained.
On April 1st.
