READING MINDS
Two teams, based in the US and the UK respectively, claim they have been able to monitor thoughts using brain scans. The UK study started with the basics: they had their participants look at two different images, one stationed in front of each eye. As the mind can only process one at a time, the scientists found they could tell which the participant was looking at using an fMRI scan.

The US team was a little more interesting: they showed their subjects the movie The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly while plugging electrodes into their skull. The scientists found they could predict what scenes were being watched depending on the brainwave information. Says US scientist John-Dylan Haynes, "Our study represents an important but very early stage step towards eventually building a machine that can track a person's consciousness on a second-by-second basis."
