The final Fatima witness was laid to rest this past Sunday, a year after she died. Sister Lucia was one of three children who, between the months of May and October, 1917, claimed to have witnessed the spirit of the Virgin Mary. On July 13th, the Virgin Mary allegedly gave them three secrets, which have since become known as the Fatima prophecies.
Roughly speaking, the first is interpreted as predicting the two world wars; the second concerns the future return of Russia to Christianity; and the third (the most heavily debated) refers to the assassination attempt on John Paul II. On the Virgin's final appearance to the children, an estimated 50,000 people were said to have seen bright lights and colors.
Sister Lucia's remains were moved to the shrine of Fatima, built at the location where she is said to have seen the Virgin Mary.
