STUDY TO EXAMINE WHY MISSING LIMB STILL HURTS
A new study in Australia is investigating the mystery of why amputated limbs continue to hurt long after they are removed. Alan Lemon, a farmer from Roma, lost his leg over 50 years ago and still continues to feel pain to this day. Says Lemon: There are times when my left leg is poking out and I can see the foot but the foot is not there...There are days when the pain is not so bad and you can put up with it. Those days it feels like the leg is in warm bath water."

While infinitely fascinating and nothing I would discourage further studies of, this is far from new territory--Ramachandran's work on somatosensory mapping and phantom limbs is widely known in neurological and psychological circles:
