THE SEARCH FOR ICE WORMS
For years, ice worms were considered a myth. Now scientists know that the black, inch-long creatures exist, and are actively studying them for possible scientific gains. Ice worms are found in the coastal glaciers and snowfields of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon, and burrow through the snow with ease. They function best at temperatures close to freezing; warm them up too much and they melt.

Unlike most animals, when the weather gets cold, their cell production goes up. Scientists hope to harness this ability to create chemicals or drugs to keep organs alive longer. NASA spent $200,000 last year to study the worms' cold tolerance, and what it could mean for the possibility of life on freezing planets like Jupiter's icy moons.
