As we previously reported, British hacker Gary McKinnon pulled off "the biggest military hack of all time" into US government computers on a quest for classified information about UFOs, and was caught. Now, he faces possible extradition from Britain, along with 60 years in a jail and even falling under Military Order No. 1, which might force him to be imprisoned indefinitely or face trial by military commission. The 2-year extradition proceedings are expected to end this week.
McKinnon is accused of hacking into 97 computers, which breaks down as 53 from the US Army, 26 from the US Navy, 16 at Nasa, one at the US Department of Defense and one at the US Air Force. He is also accused of leaving threatening messages regarding US foreign policy on some of the hacked computers, which he denies. One message allegedly read: "US foreign policy is akin to government-sponsored terrorism these days. I am Solo. I will continue to disrupt at the highest levels."
Did McKinnon find anything on the computers? He started by hacking into NASA's Johnson Space Center, where he found "folders full of megabytes of images but I could not transfer them as I was only using a 56k modem," he says. That's right: 56K. Jesus.
