Ever since the Mars rover landed in 2004, scientists have looked forward to its arrival at an area dubbed "Home Plate," located in the Gusev crater. Overhead images had previously suggested it might have some importance, resembling a playa or evaporite basin. After arriving, the rover found an area with a number of layered rocks. Where they came from or why they were in this pattern is unknown. In fact, why this is of any interest at all is really not described in the article, but the scientists behind the mission are really freaking out over it.
