On March 13, 1997, numerous UFO sightings were made across Arizona in what would later be dubbed the "Phoenix Lights" incident. Hundreds of witnesses saw what were described as an array of lights over the desert. The following Thursday, then Governor Fife Symington promised a full investigation into the matter. At a later press conference, Symington came out with a member of his staff dressed up in an alien mask and wearing handcuffs - he had caught the culprit! Everyone had a laugh, though if the Phoenix Lights turned out to be the first step in an Independence Day-style invasion, Symington would undoubtedly be the guy who goes in the first wave.
Luckily, it wasn't Independence Day. However, in a recent interview, Symington has recently revealed that he in fact saw a V-shaped UFO that evening, and has no explanation for it. He defends his prank as a way to calm the state-wide hysteria following the incident, and believes that a serious investigation should be carried out (Senator John McCain called for investigation 10 years ago; still waiting on that one).
